What are Primary and Secondary Sources?

Primary Sources:  Original, first hand accounts of a time period or of an event Secondary Sources:  Analysis or interpretation of a time period, event, or primary source

Example:  

  • Newspapers written at the time
  • Personal diaries, memoirs, journals
  • Correspondence written at the time
  • Original works or creative works of art

Example:

  • An analysis of news writing from a time period
  • An interpretation of a work of art or work of literature
  • A second-hand account of a historical period or event.
