What is OverDrive eBooks?

OverDrive eBooks allows University of Delaware faculty, students and staff to borrow popular fiction and nonfiction eBooks and download them to computers and portable devices.

Users will need a current UDelNetID and password to check out eBooks.

 

Compatible Computers and Portable Devices

A wide range of eBook readers and portable devices can be used. See the OverDrive Device Resource Center for details.

 

Technology Required

-PC, Mac or portable device

-UDelNet ID and password

-Free software or app (e.g., OverDrive Media Console app, Adobe Digital Editions or Amazon Kindle Reading app)

-Older Kindle models and some Nooks require USB cables

-An Adobe ID or Amazon Kindle account may be required for some applications

 

Borrowing eBooks

Checkout Limit
A user may have up to three eBooks checked out at one time.

Lending Period
The lending period is 14 days. Books are automatically returned on the due date and can be returned early.

Renewal
The eBooks cannot be renewed. If no one else has placed a hold on the book, users can check out the book a second time.

 

OverDrive eBooks Guide

This guide is designed to help OverDrive eBooks users at the University of Delaware.

Getting Started

Step 1: Obtain an Adobe ID or Amazon Kindle account (if required for the computer or device).

Step 2: Install the applicable free software or app (e.g., OverDrive Media Console app, Adobe Digital Editions or Amazon Kindle Reading app).

Step 3: Check out an eBook from OverDrive eBooks.

Step 4: Download the book and enjoy!

Each type of computer or portable device downloads eBooks in a different way. Once the eBook format has been selected at Add to Cart (EPUB, PDF or Kindle), OverDrive eBooks will provide instructions.

 

How to Check Out an eBook from OverDrive eBooks

1. Go to OverDrive eBooks.

2. Browse or search by title, subject or author.

3. Select the Add to Cart format (EPUB, PDF or Kindle).

4. Click Proceed to Checkout. Books stay in a cart for 30 minutes.

5. Sign-in with a current UDelNet ID and password.

6. The lending period is 14 days. Choose Confirm Check Out.

7. Select Download or click Get for Kindle.

The Library welcomes suggestions for OverDrive eBooks. Please use the Recommendation for Purchase form to send your suggestions.

The OverDrive Going Mobile videos provide a series of short, step by step videos. Each series is designed to help users browse, check out, and download.

 

Placing a Hold on an eBook

If an eBook is unavailable, the message Place a Hold appears instead of Add to Cart. Provide your contact information.

When notified that the eBook is available, click My Account on the OverDrive eBooks website and sign in. Choose My Holds and proceed to check out.

A maximum of six eBooks can be added to a hold list.

Holds will expire three days after notification.
