FAQs at the Film & Video Collection Service Desk
1) I’ve been waiting for this title and it’s never in – can I recall it?
“Our materials are available on a first-come, first-served basis -- we do not recall materials or process holds. If you are an instructor who needs to schedule it for class use a week or more in the future, we can help with that.”
2) Can you hold this title for me when it is returned?
“I’m sorry but we do not process holds for Film & Video items. I can show you how to keep an eye on the item in DELCAT so you can see when it is returned.”
3) The record says “In Process” -- what does that mean and when can I get it?
“This title is being cataloged. If you would like to request that cataloging be expedited, you can click this button [see In Process Materials Request Form via the F&V Forms page] and fill out the information. We will notify you when it is available for circulation or scheduling, but we cannot hold it for you.”
4) How can I see what titles have just come in?
“We have a LibGuide of newly-acquired Film & Video items. Each title has a link to the DELCAT record so you can check to see if it’s currently available or when it’s due back.”
5) I forgot my ID, can I still take this out/watch it here?
“A valid ID is required to use the Film & Video Collection. You are required to have your UD ID on you at all times when you are on campus.”
6) I’ve had this for 3 days but I didn’t get a chance to watch it, can I renew it?
“I’m sorry, there are no renewals. You can come back for it tomorrow (or the next day we’re open) if no one else has checked it out. I can show you how to look that up if you’d like?”
7) Can you recommend a good film? Can you recommend a good film about ______?
You can recommend something from personal experience or show them our Browse Collections web page. Familiarize yourself with these resources so you can best direct the user to the best resource. For instance, the Film Studies Research Guide (Finding Videos) can be especially helpful if the user has a particular genre in mind. All F&V items are in DELCAT Discovery -- staff can help educate users about how to do keyword searches. You may also direct them to our small reference area for viewing ideas. You can always get staff to help (especially if it’s faculty looking for class material).
8) Why is this title restricted?
“There are several reasons Film & Video items may be restricted. It may be being used by a class this semester, or difficult / rare / expensive to replace.” If users have further questions, alert staff and we may be able to give them more information about why a particular title is on Restricted Loan.
9) Can I get headphones to use on the computers?
“Our headphones are only for use in Film & Video, but the Student Multimedia Design Center has headphones to lend for use with the computers in that area.”
10) I’m not taking summer classes. Can I still use my I.D. to take out material?
“If you are enrolled in classes for the Fall, it should work.” (If in doubt, you can always scan their ID and WMS will tell you their status. Any problems with an ID should be sent to the Circulation Desk.)
11) Where do I pay my fines?
“If you are assessed a fine, it will be added to your UDSIS account and you can pay it with Flex, online or in person at Student Services.” Any additional questions about fines (why we charge them, how much has been assessed) can go to F&V staff. NEVER give a user information about fines based on what you see in WMS. It is almost always incorrect!
