Connected Papers

Connected Papers offers both free and premium (paid) accounts. Like Research Rabbit, it presents information in a graphical format that shows connections between the citations in papers. Additional functionality allows for tracking citations back in time to understand how research developed, and also "derivative" works, or those that cite the work you are looking at. Since the free service only lets you make 5 graphs, this is more of a tool for getting a quick look at the scholarship related to a specific research question.

Data Sources: Connected Papers uses Semantic Scholar as its data source for citations.

For an examination of the tool and its workflow, see Behera, P. K., Jain, S. J., & Kumar, A. (2023). Visual exploration of literature using Connected Papers: A practical approach. Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, 104. https://doi.org/10.29173/istl2760
