Liaison Toolkit

Scholarly Communication and Copyright Competencies

Librarians support the campus community by providing basic information about publishing, open access models for disseminating new knowledge, digital publishing, open educational resources, and author's rights.

Within their assigned disciplines, liaisons should be able to:

  • Explain how scholarly communication works (including understanding new forms of scholarly publishing, research outputs, and creative expression) and describe emerging trends in their assigned disciplines
  • Engage with faculty, grad students, and other researchers in conversations about publishing practices in discipline(s), researcher profiles (e.g., ORCID) and impact measures (such as, article-level metrics, author-level metrics, journal or publisher metrics, and alt-metrics).
  • Explain the principles behind open access publishing, open data, and public access practices and the available open access options for scholars in their assigned disciplines
  • Maintain an awareness of major/relevant funders and their mandates and requirements about sharing funded research results including publishing embargos in your assigned disciplines
  • Track emerging trends in the use of generative AI in the research cycle and research outputs
  • Describe the functions and policies of institutional repositories (including UD’s) and disciplinary repositories generally
  • Conduct basic fair use assessments in the educational setting including for OERs
  • Explain author’s rights and be able to direct faculty and students to resources to support their publishing efforts.
