Environmental Racism in San FranciscoThe Bayview-Hunter’s Point (BVHP) neighborhood in San Francisco is one of the last majority Black neighborhoods in the city. BVHP also faces higher levels of air, water, and soil pollution from industry pollution, high traffic volume, a legacy of oil-powered power plants, and radioactive waste. This pollution coupled with other environmental injustices leads to appalling disparities in health outcomes for residents of BVHP compared to other residents of the city. This zine aims to raise awareness for the systematic way that BVHP has been treated as the dumping grounds for the wealth of San Francisco. Additionally, this zine highlights the efforts of community groups to monitor environmental quality, raise awareness for efforts to change damaging governmental policy, and protest and sue companies that perpetrate environmental violence.
