Literature, American history, and Delaware history are among the broad subject areas collected in great depth in Special Collections.

Special Collections literary holdings include books by numerous African American authors from the colonial period to contemporary times, with a concentration on the period of the Harlem Renaissance. Highlights include a first edition of Phillis Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects (1753), as well as first editions and signed copies by  Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Audre Lorde, and many others.

In addition to general Historical Sources, Special Collections also has a large number of historical works relating to slavery, abolitionism, and the Underground Railroad, as well as the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century.
